The XXXVI Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy will Bring Together Leaders and Experts to Analyse Fiscal Policy Challenges in the Region

3 May 2024|Announcement

The traditional yearly meeting will be held at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile from 6 to 8 May with the participation of authorities from the Ministries of Finance of 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

From 6 to 8 May, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host the XXXVI Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy, a renowned international forum that has brought together leaders, specialists, civil society, and academia for 36 years to discuss fiscal policy challenges faced by countries in the region.

Leaders from the Ministries of Finance of 13 countries across the region will participate in the meeting, along with renowned experts from international organisations, academia, civil society organisations and NGOs.

The seminar will include presentations by leaders, academics and representatives from international organisations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), CAF–Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean and the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT in Spanish). The event is sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID in Spanish).

The attendees will address fiscal policy challenges in a context of low growth and the challenges of climate change. They will analyse options for expanding fiscal space and examine the possible fiscal impacts of a carbon tax.

They will also analyse public spending and priorities for reaching more sustainable development, strengthening public revenue to finance it and the sustainability of public debt.

The meeting will be inaugurated on Monday, 6 May at 14:30 Chilean time (GMT -4) by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; a representative from the Ministry of Finance of Chile; and Laura Oroz, Director of Co-operation with Latin America and the Caribbean at AECID.

During the event, ECLAC will publish the Fiscal Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2024, an annual publication in which the United Nations regional organisation examines topics relevant to the regional debate on climate change and fiscal policy and highlights the fact that restoring and boosting sustainable and inclusive growth requires promoting significant changes to the development model that would make it possible to close persistent structural gaps with regards to productivity and productive, social, and environmental heterogeneity.

On Tuesday, 7 May, the XXXVI Fiscal Seminar will also include the presentation of results from the Revenue Statistics in Latin American and the Caribbean report (2024), a publication jointly prepared by ECLAC, OECD, CIAT and the IDB group.

Media outlets are invited to follow the meeting at https://live.cepal.org/seminariofiscal/ and at the ECLAC website.
