Just transition: strategies for a sustainable recovery

30 June 2021|Event

The United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC, or CEPAL for the acronym in Spanish and Portuguese) and the Environment Commission of the Brazilian Federal Senate co-organize the High-Level (online) Seminar “Just Transition: Strategies for a Sustainable Recovery” on Wednesday (30 June) from 11h to 12h30 (GMT-3).

The seminar takes place within the context of the celebrations of the Month of the Environment “Green June” to discuss the relevance of environmental justice in the design of sustainable recovery strategies and policies.

The unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the existence of profound structural development gaps and has generated a severe public, economic and social health crisis in Brazil, Latin America and worldwide. It has become increasingly clear that a transformative recovery with equality and sustainability is necessary.

Countries are faced with a unique opportunity to build a post-pandemic economic reactivation that structurally reorient the economy by generating jobs and income, promoting social justice, recovering natural capital and reducing environmental impacts.

The seminar seeks to catalyze a dialogue between leaders of sustainable recovery proposals, and become a forum to exchange policy proposals, build momentum for fair climate action and engage civil society on this agenda.

The objective of the seminar is to raise awareness about the importance of climate justice as an explicit component of sustainable recovery strategies worldwide.

Leaders from diverse countries will debate (virtually) strategies for a sustainable recovery on social, economic and environmental basis, from the crisis associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The panelists include: Senator Jaques Wagner (Chair of Environment Commission of the Brazilian Federal Senate) Mario Cimoli (Deputy Executive Secretary of ECLAC/CEPAL), Gladys Esther González (Chair of the Environment and Sustainable Development Commission of the Argentinian Senate), José Manuel Fernandez (Member of European Parliament (MEP) and Chair of the European Parliament Group for Brazil), Jürgen Trittin (Member of the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) and Deputy Chairman of the German-Brazilian Parliamentary Group) and Edward Markey (Senator and a Representative from Massachusetts in the United States Senate).
